This was David Essex's second album and while he was certainly in full teenage idol mode at this point, it is certainly an album with hidden depths and a surprising amount of credibility.

For a few years, Essex put out some pretty good material, all self-penned too. The commercial cover does the album no favours.

Miss Sweetness Stardust "Gonna Make You A Star" was a huge number one hit and extremely catchy and singalong it was too, with a classic keyboard riff. Lyrically, it was a wry, somewhat cynical observation by Essex on the nature of the stardom that he already had.

The record is out in Europe but remains unreleased in America, though Essex hopes to make a distribution deal soon. Lately, building an American audience has become a priority. I should have put the emphasis on America a little earlier — toured there or done something.

  1. I have had this album on vinal since It was great to get it on CD, thanks to Amazon, a CD that has also been remastered. All tracks are great David Essex hits but I got it for the best track, track 12, CITY LIGHTS. Get it, if only for this track/5(11).

  8. David Essex has had some success in England in the role of Jesus in "Godspell" and as the composer-performer of a hit single, "Rock On." I listened to the latter on this album, and my conclusion is that if this is what the English consider music then they are in the dark for more reasons than an Energy Crisis.
